Road Blocks are used to prevent the player from entering into areas that would cause the game to advance too far ahead into the story. So they act to prevent this issue, as well as guide the player to their next destination by limiting how far they can go.
They also act as obstacles for the player when they are searching through the areas or when they are trying to escape hostile Spirits that try to kill them.
